What are the 3 must-have skills as an Industrial Engineer? Here’s what I’ve learned:

1️⃣ Ask a lot of questions: In my experience working with and consulting companies of all sizes, I've noticed a common trend among Industrial Engineers. Many of them fail to create the impact they are capable of simply because they don't ask enough questions. Remember, it's not a contest to prove your intelligence; it's about solving a problem. Every small bit of information can be a valuable input for improvement. So don't hesitate to ask, even if you think it might come across as silly.

2️⃣ Pay attention to detail: "Pay attention to detail" is the best lesson I learned as a fresh IE Trainee, and it's a lesson that still holds true after 14 years. Projects are often time-bound and under pressure to be completed quickly. However, many young Industrial Engineers succumb to this pressure and fail to dive deeper into the problem. They end up designing systems or solutions based on only the most recent causes, which accounts for just 20% of the overall picture. By paying attention to detail and analyzing the entire context, you can design more effective and comprehensive solutions.

3️⃣ Make good presentations: A good presentation acts as a window through which management sees your work. The more impactful and clear your presentation, the faster you can gain buy-in from your stakeholders. Developing the skill of creating engaging presentations not only showcases your expertise but also builds trust in your capabilities. Trust leads to easier implementation of your solutions, creating a positive ripple effect in the workplace.

Remember, asking questions helps you gain experience, and paying attention to detail builds confidence. These two ingredients are crucial for effective communication. Additionally, developing the art of creating good presentations not only enhances your professional image but also makes implementing your solutions much smoother.

So, let's strive to be Industrial Engineers who continuously learn, ask insightful questions, pay attention to detail, and deliver impactful presentations. Together, we can make a lasting difference in our workplaces and contribute to the success of our organizations. #anddiligence #IndustrialEngineering #SkillsThatMatter #ContinuousImprovement
